Risk Factors
Risk factors for pre-diabetes are similar to those for Type 2 diabetes which are:
- Being overweight or obese – especially those who have excess weight around the waistline
- Being physically inactive
- Having high blood pressure
- Having a family history of Type 2 diabetes and/or heart disease
Managing Pre-Diabetes
If you have been diagnosed with pre-diabetes, consider it a timely warning as you risk progressing to Type 2 diabetes. Approximately one in three people with pre-diabetes will go on to develop Type 2 diabetes. Working together with your healthcare professional, there are lots of things you can do to improve your health, but you need to start now. This includes lifestyle changes such as healthy eating, regular physical activity and losing weight if needed.
